These Area Towns Rank Highest Upstate For Longest Commutes

Using data from the U.S. Census, NewYorkUpstate.com compiled the municipalities with the most “super commuters,” a number which has risen 31.7 percent since 2005.

According to the report, researchers used "mean travel time to work" data from the U.S. Census, NewYorkUpstate.com ranked the top 50 upstate New York towns, cities and villages where residents have the longest commutes.

The report only includes municipalities from upstate New York - which is considered by the website to be areas north of Westchester and Rockland counties for this study - in the rankings.

Local municipalities to make the list include: 

Cold Spring (Putnam County) - third overall;

• Average commute: 52.6 minutes;
• Working population: 986;
• Commute greater than an hour: 42.4 percent;
• Work outside of place: 75.9 percent;
• Work outside of county: 56.4 percent.

Greenwood Lake (Orange County) - fourth

• Average commute: 49.7 minutes;
• Working population: 1,742;
• Commute greater than an hour: 35.9 percent;
• Work outside of place: 85.4 percent;
• Work outside of county: 39.2 percent.

Merritt Park (Dutchess County) - fifth

• Average commute: 46.6 minutes;
• Working population: 776;
• Commute greater than an hour: 33.5 percent;
• Work outside of place: 84.4 percent;
• Work outside of county: 53.2 percent.

Nelsonville (Putnam County) - sixth

• Average commute: 46.3 minutes;
• Working population: 311;
• Commute greater than an hour: 38.8 percent;
• Work outside of place: 90.4 percent;
• Work outside of county: 56.3 percent.

Mountain Lodge Park (Orange County) - seventh

• Average commute: 44.6 minutes;
• Working population: 832;
